I called home this morning as usual to check on Doug and the pupperz.
Seems that Sophie wasnt' her normal self this morning.

Doug usually gets Casey and Sophie from my bed in the morning and takes them out for walkies. Sophie usually rolls over on her back and Doug has to give her belly rubs before she gets off the bed. As IF she is saying to him, Rub my tummy first and then I will allow you to take me out for a walk.
She DID NOT want to get out of Mommies bed and go for walkies! Doug tried to rub her belly and she just kept yelping. It took him 20 minutes to get her outta bed and down the stairs. She yelped when he put her leash on and walked very slowly on her walkies. When she came home she did not eat and just layed on the hardwood floor (which she never does)

I am thinking the worst...Back problems but she was fine last night and did her usual snoring last night.

Doug says she seems depressed. He tried to comfort her but she just yelped. When I called he put the phone to her ear and I said to her, "How's Mommie's Little Sopher doin'?" She perked right up! and was waggin' her tail.

Let's hope that she just misses Mommie and that all will be fine when I get home. If not.....Off to the VET we go!

I have been home alot lately due to the Christmas holidays., We snuggled and cuddled and I fussed over both of them and now I am at work.

Come to think of it....I was so rushed this morning I didn't give her a kiss good-bye:shocked: Could that be it????

Please send her :rayz: :rayz:

I just HATE to hear when one of our babies isn't well and we don't know what's wrong and how to comfort them. I do hope when you go home she'll be better, but if not we know she's in GREAT hands and the vet will shed some light on things. I'd try and keep her confined to a crate during the day with little activity just in case it is a back injury.

In the meantime....:bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: and keep us posted!

:bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: Here are some Sophie rayz, it may just be that she doesn't want to fall into the old routine and is protesting you going back to work. Tail wagging is a great sign, but if she still isn't herself when you get home, off to da woom of doom.

Is she usually a big yelper?

YES! Especially when she isn't in the mood to be touched!

She used to yelp at me (when we first got her)
Now she doesn't. SHe just lets me touch her all over.

I called home again. She is snuggled in MY bed sleeping on MY PJ's on MY side of the bed, with her head on MY pillow!

She did allow Doug to touch her without yelping ( A good Sign )
He even pulled on her little legs and she didn't fuss.

I took Sophie to the Vet at 4pm. The office was packed! I explained Sophie's situation to the Receptionist and she put me in a room to see the Doc right away.

The Doctor came to look at Sophie. He remembered her and said 'OH, Looks like she has gained weight!" It was My worst fear! I placed her on the scale and she only weighed 16 pounds. She hadn't lost any weight but she didn't gain any either.

He examined her and told me that he believes it is her Spine/Back. He gave her a needle (antibiotic) and told me that she needs Xrays. I will need to bring her back tomorrow at 10 am to get Xrays and have her Anal Glands expressed. He would have done her Anal Glands but said that she has gone thru enough trauma right now and didn't want her to wiggle around too much. He will do it tomorrow when they sedate her for her Xrays. He will also do a full blood work panel on her. Her Dental will be done in February.

We both came to the conclusion that since I got her from Rescue, She may have had this problem since May and just aggrivated it more over the week-end.
Please understand that If you picked up Sophie the wrong way she would let out a YELP. I just thought it was part of her Sunny Disposition.

She cannot be taken out for a walk, I need to carry her to a spot and let her eliminate there. She is to rest for the remainder of the night ( doesn't need to be crate rest). She is sleeping under my computer on her bed.
He did tell me that because of the injection, she will be thirsty more than usual and will need to go out to pee more often.

She will go in tomorrow at 10 am and I will pick her up at 5:30 pm.

Please send more of those Wonderful :bigrayz: :bigrayz: and a little :pray:er Sophie's way.

Side note: As I got her crate ready to go, Casey had went in it and wouldn't come out! Brett had to coax him out! After Sophie got in the crate, Casey licked her thru the bars and whined. He stood in front of the door and whined. Brett picked him up and he whined even more.

He was very happy to see his sister come home and did his little happy dance. He has licked her face and has been checking on her periodically.

He knows there is something wrong with his sister, and is showing her that he loves her :hearts:

I'm so happy you got her to the vets as soon as you did. The injection was probably a steroid type which will make her drink water, but will make her feel better. I can even do a dance if I get a Pred injection. Nothing else you can do except follow the vets instructions. I'm sending mega healing :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: and :pray:ers to Sophie girl.

Since Sophie needed to rest, I thought I would bring the crate downstairs to the Living room. Which one do you think needed the CRATE rest?

Thanks for the links Patt:hearts:
Iwas ahead of you on that one. I checked out these sites while I was at work, in denial that anything would be wrong with my little girl.
The Vet did ask me what I would do If Sophie were to ever be paralyzed. I didn't even hesitate, I told him I would buy her a cart so she would be a Cart Wonder!
He was relieved. He told me that alot of People put their dogs down when that happens. NOT ME! NO SIR!

Here a a few mega:bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: to get you started

Join DODGERS and I will see you there.

Now, take a deep breath and let it out slowly. You need to be calm for Sophia. If you are depressed she will pick up on it and act out also.

It could be a number of thing including anal glads, constipation, toe nails too long, to name a few.

Remember x-rays are not the bet for showing problems you will really need and mylogram for better detail.

Not all dogs needs surgery. Crate rest and meds do help a great many puppers.

E-mail me or IM privately if you need to chat.

Love Ya and Shophia

I missed this thread somehow. :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: for Sophie.

I know you like to share your food with them but I think now is the time to stop it. I know it is fun and they really want it but it is not good for them. Our beloved Ruble was a good example of it. Bulldogs always look hungry and so we shared our food. Pizza was his favorite. Well one day he jumped off his favorite couch and couldn't very well walk after that. After the trip to the vet we were told that both of his hips needed replacement due to their bad shape at $2,500 each. BUT due to his size and weight it would have to be done at the UF AND he needs to loose weight to get it done. That was our HUGE wakeup call. Rumble was put on a diet and lost 20 lbs.

And guess what? He didn't need those artificial hips once he lost weight! He did have another flare up of arthritis that year but only needed anti-inflammatory meds.

Since that time we all understood and maintained his weight at that.

Sorry if I sound a bit as I am lecturing you. I just want what is best for Sophie. I hope you understand.

Alfina,

You are so right! Doug and I were just discussing that very same thing.
No more table scraps for Sophie or Casey. Sophie needs to lose 4 pounds and we have been trying.
This could be our wake up call!

Sophie doesn't jump anywhere! She barks as If to say "Hey! I'm over here come and get me!"
I carry her up and down the stairs (she waits for me to do it)

Thanks for your concern......It was not a lecture :hearts:

I would have her loose some weight and start her on Ester-C, glucosamine/chondroitine and that should help her, start with 250 mg each and work up. Petunia has to loose a couple of pounds also. Mine don't get table food but at treat time she seems to get Gunners all the time.

JanUet

Casey and Sophie get the Ester-C & Glucosamine/Chondroitine. I give it to them in their evening meals (Raw premix and Veggies). Doesn't mix to well with kibble they get in the morning (the crap the Vet suggested they be on)

I took Sophie out to pee at 9pm. She wandered a wee bit and seemed to want to go back to bed instead. I waited outside with her until she tinkled.

Tonight she will still sleep with me as usual in the Big Bed. I couldn't bare for her not to be with me while she is in such discomfort.

Tomorrow I will take some time off work and take her to the Vet for her Xrays.

I had a bath ( there i do my best crying) Doug says I must be the CLEANEST Cry baby in the world!

Please consider Yolanda's suggestion of contacting the people on Dodgerslist. Together they have many years of experience with Doxie back problems I'm sure they would be delighted to hear from you and help you in any way they can. I'm happy to hear no more table scraps or whatever I'm sure if you stick to her normal diet she will have no choice but to loose weight and her back will thank you too.
Sending more :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: to Sophie.

I'm sure I missed some stuff....the shot sounds like it was cortizone? Januet Create rest is very hard to do ....but, it would be a must for me....for Sophie sake. I've worked with lots of doxies with back problems...they have to have create rest.
Why do they have to sedate her to do xrays and why do you have to bring her back to get them?????
Sorry if I'm sounding irritated but, back problems are serious and time sensative..... We had a Doxie go down in a foster home yesterday....and the foster mom took her to 2 vets......they were running her around ....so me the crazy lady had to go and TELL the vet what I wanted.....You shouldn't need a mylogram unless Sophie is a candidate for surgery....but I could be wrong
I'll be thinking of you guys and sending lots of :hearts: :hearts: Cami Kisses!
