L@@K at these faces!!! FREE TO GOOD HOME........

SO HERE'S WHY THEY ARE FREE......
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my dogs with all my heart and soul, but I have HAD it with this potty training!!! Its super cold and windy out AGAIN and they just WILL NOT go if its like that out. I had them out there for like 20 minutes, brought them in, was giving it about 5 min or so and was going to go back out. I went to the bathroom myself, and then was gonna take them right back out. Only by the time I was done, Heidi didn't NEED to go out. SHe just relieved herself (1 & 2) ON A PILE OF CLEAN CLOTHES. Not only did she do that, but Buddy trying to help her from getting in trouble ATE her number 2!!!!!! Some days I feel like they've TOTALLY got it, other's I just want to sit in the corner and rock myself back and forth crying like a 2 year old. I have tried just about EVERYTHING that I can possibly think of. Taking them out, no potty into the crate for 5-10 in then back out repeat until they go. Teather them to me (that's really hard and a bit hazzardous w/ 2 dogs) so they are not out of my sight and can't go. ANY and ALL suggestions at this point are perfectly welcomed. I have been dealing with this for 3 years now and I'm at my TOTAL wit's end. I want to have a house someday, but I do not want to have to replace carpets all the time or worry about hard wood floors getting ruined. I want to be able to have people over and NOT have to clean carpets for 3 days ahead or be horribly embarassed b/c the stains DO NOT COME OUT (cheap landlords and cheap carpet). I feel like I have failed them terribly and just don't know what to do anymore!!!! Sorry for the rant but I need all the help I can get!!!!!!!

It took me very little time to realize that if I had Taffy outside, and she didn't go, but I had to.....to stop off and CRATE HER on my way to the bathroom....let her howl. Otherwise, she would take advantage, and I would be cleaning something.
Other than that, just keep taking them out until they go, back into the crate, back outside, back into the crate. Be the Doxy....out-stubborn them.
Good luck. Oh....keep a large supply of chocolate and ice cream on hand...for you.

Oh Becca!!! :hug99: :hug99: :hug99: I'll take them in for Boot Camp training, but they just might become mine! :hearts: I can't remember... have you tried paper training for those times when they won't go out? I'm not the expert.
:holyshp: You sound exactly how I was a few months ago with my puppers' SA. You are a great mom. Something WILL work out! :rayz: :rayz:
You can put your kids on a plane to CA… We’ll take ‘em. J/K :)
Sorry to her about your problem Becca. But since we haven’t had a house trained dog since 1989, we’ve completely forgotten what its like. Actually none of our Doxies have been 100% house trained, so as a result, we have the some of the cleanest scrubbed floors and porches in the world.
You’re absolutely right about the weather entering into the problem. We’ve had dogs that will stick their noses out on a cold day, refuse to go outside and then poop on the floor. I can’t blame them for that.
Beyond the weather problem though, make sure that neither Heidi nor Buddy have any medical problems. Because Heidi is older she may be having memory problems like all senior’s do and you’ll have to make allowances for her. That said, I guess the next step is to go back to House Training 101.
Do you feed Heidi & Buddy on a regular schedule? Remember what goes in on schedule will come out on schedule. I know you can’t be following them around all of the time, but I’ve learned that if they make a mistake when I’m not paying attention, that’s actually my fault and not theirs. Punishing a dog for making a mess in the house will only create stress and cause more problems. Remember dogs have no idea why we get upset when they have accidents. In time, most dogs learn to go outside, but you’ll have to be consistent, patient and there for them.
For company you can put 'carpet runners' down to cover the stains and pick them up when they leave. Good luck!

Be the Doxy....out-stubborn them.
I used this method on a very stubborn foster that I had. She wasn't happy about it, but it did work. By the time I sent her to her forever home, she was mostly housetrained. Miller on the other hand has never gotten housetrained. He's a stress pee-er. When he's under stress or I'm stressing causing him to stress, he pees on something. I don't have any good answers for you since I haven't done that well with mine. :dunno:

Patt- have you been spying on Duchie? it is 23 outside here, and for her that is subzero and unacceptable. She will pee outside but has been reserving her poopies for the kitchen rug. GRRRRR...
Bex- I know all too well about the frustration and the carpet (all bad...)
Hang in there. Spring is coming... :bflower:

I feel your pain, Becca, believe me!!! It took me 6 years to convince :angel7: Maxe to pee outside ALL the time, not just when she wanted to. The weather thing is a huge problem, especially when its rainy and windy, or blizzarding. After that, she was great, but I can't say that it was anything I did, more that she finally decided to do it. Mind you, it might have coincided with her having back problems (IVDD) and being crated. Going out was a big treat after being stuck in her crate, even if she was carried out, placed to pee, and then carried back in. So maybe the crate thing really does work, I guess. I never thought about it before...
Alex, on the other hand, has never been fully housetrained mostly due, I think, to her SA. And now that she's an old girl, she's become a bit incontinent...NOT helped by the fact that I have to give her diuretics because of her congestive heart failure. ...my version of hell!! :rotfl: Believe me, I totally understand your frustration, especially the living in someone else's space thing. I'm housesitting for a friend until I finish this stupid degree and live in constant fear of Alex peeing on or chewing her rugs and furniture.
Good thing we love 'em!! :bighug: to you and :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: for them getting the right idea!

My three have a doggie door and can go out anytime they want as I very rarely lock it. None the less occasionaly they will pee on the kitchen floor. (one goes then the other two goes so it is a big puddle) Cinnamon sometimes poops and the way I know it is her as she won't stay in one spot so it gets scattered. They all meet me at the gate in the mornings all yapping for their breakfast and when I see a puddle on the floor I say OK who did it. They run and jump in their bed and look at me like they are saying not us. Then it won't happen for awhile but sooner or later they will do it again. And yes they do get their breakfast after a few minutes delay.
As a city dweller, I have to ask, are you letting them out into a yard, or actually making them walk for a few blocks? Unless its super cold, 25 or less, Tasha walks for 15+ blocks twice a day with a shorter walk at 8 pm. She has ample time to potty.
But hey, I'm one of those rare doxie owners who has a 100% potty trained dog. One accident in the 20 months we've had her, and that was in the first week after we got her.
Sending potty training and patience :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: :bigrayz: your way!!

I'm sorry it took so long for me to reply. :bigrayz: :bigrayz: potty rayz your way. I know this doesn't help much, but when you do decide to purchase a house, go with tile...preferably ceramic. Easy cleanup for accidents and the smell won't 'seep' in as much as in carpet. I hope you can figure out why Heidi is intent on using your home and clothes as her toilet.

ITA w/ all this advice.....mine are on a schedule, even the 4 mos. old pups.
It is something that you have to do...regular routine. They are like alarm clocks now they let me know it' s time to go! And yes, they ALL will not go in the cold. I know I wouldn' t go potty out there in the cold! If they don' t potty, then crate 'em & wait 15-30 mins then try again. DO NOT let them have any freedom 'til they potty!!! VERY IMPORTANT, I had to learn this the hard way!

I bought a carpet shampoo machine @ Walmart that steam cleans.
You can get Pet Shampoo solution that goes into the machine that takes out the stains all the way down to the padding & removes stains & ordors.
Works Great!
I can even do the furniture, car seats, and carpet in the car with the attachment. This is what car dealerships do w/ used cars.

Becca, have you thought about trying to use papers or pads for them? Maybe if they're hell bent on staying inside, you can at least confine it to an acceptable area. Pads would get expensive after awhile, but you could invest in a few of those reusable ones that you wash. Or you could use newspaper (I hate it, though, because the pee doesnt' soak in and I inevitably spill it when I try to pick it up.)
Anyway, just a thought. Good luck!!

I try to keep Bella to a schedule and I think having her crate trained has helped us a great deal. Our babies definitely can test us but in the end all they have to do is give you that sweet, dachsie look and we melt... :hearts:

Bex----Sorry they are making you want to crawl in a corner. I totally understand and have looked at my corners with the thought that they looked comfy, safe and pee-free. Well, maybe.
I responded with some tips in the thread "Bailey, the midnight pee-er" that may help you. The only thing I left out was what Patt and a couple other fine ladies said about keeping to a schedule. Easy to say and hard to do sometimes, but it is very important.
Since I have been sick, my schedule is very screwy, so I take extra pains to watch them all VERY closely. If you see serious round-about sniffing or a slinky body---get them outside ASAP. Dead giveaways!
As far as pad or paper training, you cannot have it both ways, unfortunately. I have found with mine and other dogs I have trained that it's one way or the other, no matter what. Otherwise it confuses them and they begin to branch out more and more in the house. Like they need a another reason. :conf4:
I'm pulling up ALL the carpeting on the first floor of the house I have except the dog room as it collects the mud and stuff from them coming in before it hits the rest of the house. I, too, would love to have a house that doesn't smell like a kennel all the time as Isobel, L J, Kasey and Maia have ruined the front rooms and hallway. I clean the carpets often anyway so the kennel smell is not really here, but I feel like it is---a good product for the hot water cleaners is Xtract as you can dilute it with water and it still works very well, btw. The floors will be down to sealed wood and tile with the carpeting only in the upstairs bedrooms/office--and the dogs are not allowed in either. Take a peek at the "Bailey" thread and PM me or call if you need help. I'm home lots right now.
