For the Love of Reese's Pieces SE!!

:cheer3:

Yup, that's right...Reese earned his second ED title this weekend! He barely squeaked by, but he got a Q and that's all that matters!

I just got home, and am about to go and get some dinner, so I'll post later with a picture.

But, 2 titles, in 2 months, I can't believe it.

Let's just say that Bailey will be spending lots of time training this winter. :D

Yay my Reese-y pants!

Both days of the trail had beautiful weather. It had been 2 months since our last trial and a month since our last training, so I was a little nervous and thought they'd be rusty.

Saturday
As usual, Bailey went first and didn't do much. He'd enter the tunnel, bark, back out, go back in, bark etc. The judges were nice enough to let me work with him and get him to the rats and work, so all was not lost. We definitely have some work to do this winter with it. But in the end it's about having fun. It's a little frustrating because he was doing so well, Q after Q in Intro, and then we had that issue with him bonking his head on the trap, and well, here we are.

While waiting for Senior to start, I was hearing from people who were just in Master talking about the tunnel configuration and how it was the hardest one allowable and how since these were buried tunnels, they were scented by just running the rats through the tunnel, instead of the "rat juice." Rat juice is water that has been steeped with rat poo. Anyway, we were FIRST and just as I was told, Reese did the same thing the dogs in Master did, got confused with the false exit and ended up timing out before he made it to the rats. The judge was nice enough to let me command him back in and this time he did manage to find the rats and work the full 90 seconds and we had a great recall. So, Saturday was a bust, but oh well. I found out that out of 18 dogs that ran Senior, only 2 qualified.

Sunday
Bailey did more of the same, in and out. But I am gonna work with the trainer that I used with Reese and see what happens.

Reese was 2nd today and I was so nervous. I had heard they changed the configuration of the tunnel for today's test. So, this was promising. I walk up to the line, set Reese down, point to the ground so he can catch the scent, tell him to go get the rats, and release him. He flies into the hole. I stand up and seem to be holding my breath, just waiting and listening for him to get to the rats and start working and then all of a sudden, there he is, his head popped up at the false exit. My heart sank. Then he goes back in and gets to those rats. He's feverishly working, the 90 seconds seems like forever, they remove the rats and the judge singals me to start my recall. I get down on my knees and blow my whistle and I am calling him with my head in the entrance of the tunnel. I am calling and calling and he's not coming. I am laying completely on the ground at this point, calling, dirt in my mouth from dropping my whistle, and then I hear something. He's come out the false exit, but at this point I fear it's too late. I hurry over to grab him and I've got him. I just look at the judge, already knowing he's gonna tell me I am over time. He waves his finger at me, motioning to me to walk over to him. I do. He says nothing at first and shows me his stopwatch. 90.3 seconds. All he says is, it looks like 90 seconds to me, what do you think? I just couldn't believe it. I just looked at him and put my hand on his shoulder and said thank you and took off out of there before he changed his mind. That was it. He had officially qualified and earned his Senior Title.

So, here we are! This is the same judge that gave him his Junior title!

I know I'm super late on this but I have to add my congrats. Reese is a total superstar!! Seeing earthdog in person really reveals how challenging it is. I heard people talking today about how senior is harder than masters, so good luck in your next trial and I am sure we will see an ME title soon!

Courtney - I am so with you on this !!!! Today, I visited with some other dachshund owners that I know. The one who normally handles their wire was going to be the rat steward (keeper of the rats :D) on the senior tunnel, so she asked if I would run Ilsa. Of course, I hesitated - this was my first real time to watch the competition !!! I agreed and listened very carefully to the Orientation (perfectly explained by Jill earlier in this thread !) instructions and off we went. There were 20 dogs running, and I think I heard that only 1 qualified !!! Ilsa, came out early in the false exit - but her mom understood, this was normal !!!

Like Courtney said, seeing it in person REALLY makes you appreciate the challenge !!!!

I keep imagining which of the Anipals would do well in it. Dolly might, but she's waaaay too big. I think Daisy May would be the best, with her little terrorist terrier determination. I'd just love to see them all get a try at it. I don't think any of my doxies have the instinct.

Here is a picture of the little wirehair Ilsa that I got to run on the Senior tunnel at Courtney's Earthdog event..... she was really excited - just couldn't stay in the tunnel long enough. (see in the background - they actually have some agility there - hopefully Courtney will compete out there - so we can come back and watch again ! I think she said that Po does agility?)
