Today I went to a park to meet the lady I ordered clothes with.Me and her placed and order together and I needed to pick up my stuff. She has 3 furbabies.2 chihuahuas and 1shi-zu.I also met another lady who has one dachshund named Sherman. He is a silver dapple. He got to meet Calvin, charlie and cinni. I fell in love with him. He really is a good boy.He hasn't been around other dachshunds ever.Well while we were at the park I had calvin on his harness and he houdini out of it:seeya: .He took off running into the woods and I ran after him.Irene (sherman's hoomom) held the pups while I chased him through the scary woods. He thought it was a game or something.I wanted to cry cause he kept getting further and further from me.I even lost sight of him! I found a dirt path and I followed it and looked around.I was yelling "Calvin,Calvin!":scared1: Finally I looked over and he was by a tree just scared to death.I went up to him and he didn't even move.I think he was scared that he lost me!I was scared I lost him:sad1: !I picked him up and cradled him like a baby saying I was happy to see him and for him never to do that again.I went back and put him back on harness and decided it was time to go!I made to hooman friends and 4 pupper friends.Irene said she would come over and bring Sherman so he can be around his kind..LOL!What a day!!!!!!Here is Sherman..

glad he decided the game was over. I've cried a time or two when Mitzi has rushed the door and down a busy street thinking "oh what fun." People don't realize if a dachshund doesn't want to be caught you are gonna catch it. :faint:

So glad you found poor scared Sherman!!! THAT is one of the most frightening feelings ever: when they bolt and you cannot catch them. I know what you went through and I'm just happy to hear that, aside from a bit of fear from him (which may not be a bad thing--he might think twice about bolting again) and your near coronary from fear...that you found him and everything is ok. Poor Sherman. What a doll baby!

I agree with Patt--THIGHTEN THAT HARNESS-mine don't even get out of the car without one on. If nothing else, invest in a hug-a-dox. They are worth the money.

Cute cute baby! I know only too well the HOudinin thing - mine can escape from any harness, collar, so I keep a close eye. I've been watching the Dog Whisperer and trying to pick up some training hints. He is good!

I'm glad you were able to get the little guy back!! having them run away from you is the worst feeling!
A couple of years ago, one of my little devils got out and BOLTED. so i yelled his name to get his attention and when he looked at me, i turned and ran AWAY from him, which caused him to chase me. i was then able to scoop him up as he got close to me.
ITA, Nancy, that's just what I was going to advise. If your dog is ever running away from you, do NOT chase it, but run the other way, it will make the dog chase YOU in most cases. Otherwise they'll think its a fun game and just keep going. I've seen running away as a safety tip in a couple of dog training books. I know, its not easy to keep your head when your little one runs off! Glad you captured him Erika and it all ended well.
That dapple is adorable!!

I know how much that must have scared you. Thank heavens you two were the only critters running thru the woods. When we first brought Daisy home, we couldn't buy a harness locally to fit her, and she just kept slipping her collar. Needless to say, the only ground she touched was outside in our backyard. I have puppia harnesses on both girls, and I make sure they are nice and snug. I would go with either one of those, or the hug-a-dox.
