This morning, Herman was ready for breakfast and ate his breakfast with gusto. He had been getting a little thin, so I'd upped his food to 2 cups a day, and he was happy.
Moments ago, I noticed the dog bed had a pillow out, and something was amiss. I went over to pick it up and it was heavy, with a dog shape in the bottom of it.
It was Herman. He'd passed away sometime during the day while I was here, or maybe shortly after I left for work. He went in his sleep, and didn't appear to have suffered at all. It was just his time, as we never really knew how old he was.
Herman came from Kansas, from Shonda's (frzframe) shelter, and we'd met in Memphis, TN to transfer him to me. He was going to be put down simply for being too old for anyone to want, and I'd like to think he lived his final years happily here. I'm going to bury him in the front yard, by the little Mimosa tree. He won't have to roam any longer.

There's no doubt that a little guy is up there cleaning his head again.

I'm so sorry, Andrea. I know that, although he passed in his sleep and peacefully, it's a loss nonetheless. R.I.P Herman, run free at the Bridge with your friends that have gone before you.:candle9::symp3:

Rest in peace, sweet Herman. We'll miss seeing your frosty face around down here, but know you're full and happy over the bridge. :candle:
Godspeed sweet Herman....I will miss your handsome frosty face..... I will always be thankful that you were saved by Shonda and knew a loving family with Andrea. You deserved that. I feel sure a particular spotted boy was waiting at the Bridge for you - to welcome his family member and catch up on the goings-on at the Anipal Palace.

Andrea,
Hermans passing breaks my heart. He was such a "grand old guy". Truly you have a heart of gold and he knew it.

I lined his grave with pink azalea blossoms and placed him in front of my house. He is a stray no longer, and will always be home.

Supper time was very odd without him. I always had to make sure to feed him sooner than the others, like a Senior at the Early Bird Special because it took him a little longer to eat since he got the most food. I had to swoop him up and put him in his crate and let him out last. *sigh* It never is easy. Tonight...was empty.

Had a little moment when I opened the freezer earlier. I'd purchased frozen rolls, specifically for Herman, he really liked them. And they sit there, unbaked. :( Don't know what I was waiting for, I usually don't do that. Now it's too late.
