Thought I would pass on this little tidbit of info for all the victims of chewing incidents. Works on any dog AND hoomans, too! :boogie:

Ok, we all know that Bitter Apple just doesn't cut it...but, there is an answer to keeping that pupper away from anything including eating your deck or walls and credit cards....and it's in the spice aisle in the grocery store.

I'm speaking of the spice ALUM! It's a white powder, a pickling spice actually, and when you mix a bit of it with water to the consitency of cookie frosting (think of powdered sugar and water) and then lightly spead it on said items....this is what happens.

You furkids' mouth will turn inside out and they will never do a chew on that item again. Remember...picking spice.

Try it a little bit to make sure it will not discolor items, then set your pup up. Leave out that old boot or whatever they like to chew and be there when they turn inside out...Give the command "NO Chew!" very firmly and they should back away from the item. Praise them when they drop it and back away. They may or may not desire a treat, but physically praise them briefly and then turn you back on them and walk away. That means you have dismissed them and the incident. It's a body language signal to your dog that we are done. Very important to do.

I've used this method myself (have 2 bottles due to Maia  ) and helped a man save his new deck from his chocolate lab who was systematically eating it. The chewing stopped immediately!

If you use it, please, let me know how it works for you. Thanks!

As Scooter's hoomom, I do have some problems with chewing "issues". I definitely gonna remember this. Right now his biggest problem is getting in the trash cans and shredding stuff all over the floor. I wonder if I could put it on some tissues? Hmmmm. I'll have to get some to have on hand and I might try it on the tissues.

I'm going to have to try it on shoelaces! We leave ours where Charlie can't get to them, but sometimes guests don't, so I need to teach him that it doesn't pay to chew on them!

Thanks for the great advice, Mary. :thanx: It's on my grocery list!

Thanks so much!!! When Bailey was chewing through the wall, nothing helped! He hasn't gone after it in awhile, but if he does, I will definitely try this!!

I tried the alum on the kleenex yesterday to stop the trash can surfing. I got out of the shower and *someone* had gotten a kleenex out of the trash. It was laying on the floor about a foot from the trash can. There hasn't been any trash can surfing since even though I let it get really full (laced with alum kleenex of course). Thanks for the tip.

I have a question about using alum to correct chewing. Alum is actually not a spice but a mineral; a rock that has been powdered. Can alum be unhealthy for the dog if he/she ingests a bit of it? Anyone know?I hope it's safe, as Bob Barker has gone through three pairs of my uniform shoes in just three or four weeks! Yeah, I know it's my fault....I forget to close the closet door!:duh: :duh:

I'm wondering about the safety, too - Lexie LOVES chewing on socks (and underwear and whatever happens to be on the floor, where he's not supposed to be!) and I'd like to try that on her. However, safety is an issue and that's a concern for me. Need to check that out!
P. S. From what I could find on the internet, I wouldn't recommend it!!!

Thanks so much for the tip about alum. I'm going to get some in the morning. Lucy shreds the plastic liner that hangs over trash can & i'm going to put a paste of it all around the liner tomorrow!
