The Mastiff went home last night after 10 days at our house, and the wieners are settling back into their normal routine.

We met the angel from Mastiff Rescue at a halfway point. The Good Girl is going to be spayed today, and "cat" tested. She has a wonderful new home waiting for her if she passes the "cat" test :appl: I can hardly wait for the news about if she passed.

What made me sad was the calluses on the good girl's elbows. I thought it was normal for huge dogs to have a little black skin showing there, but not that big. Anyways, she said that it looked like they were made really big from having to lay on concrete all her life and never having a soft bed. We were so worried that the comforter that we gave her to lay on didn't have enough layer cushions for her weight, but apparently it was like laying on top of 20 mattresses compared to what she had to go through before.

DH found out from a woman at a business on the other side of town, that she had seen the big girl wandering by herself way before the guy who called the ad said that he saw her wandering. So it looks like she has been on her own for quite some time.

Anyhow, now i am scrubbing the florida room. It no longer looks like a big dog was ever there, but there is still a faint doggie scent that i have yet to eradicate!

Needless to say, Ollie got ANOTHER bath as soon as we got home to get all the slobber off of him that had accumulated since the last bath a few days before.

So glad to hear the the big girl will have a nice, loving home. Hopefully it will be a forever home. Ya'll are so awsome for having picked her up and fostered her for a while. Please keep us all posted if you find out how she's doing and what her new home/owners are like.

Yay, the big girl might have a forever home waiting for her! You did wonders with her, you must be so pleased to have gotten her into rescue so never again will she have to sleep on a hard floor!!

I am very pleased.

I already know a bit about her new potential family and they sound just perfect for her. I am not going to say anything more about them unless i hear about the cat test so i don't jinx it :) They already had a home visit too

My heart is a little torn right now, though.

The reason why is that DH saw a sign advertising puppies. (keep in mind NO ONE has responded to our signs, ads, or called around looking for her.- just a call about knowing that she has been wandering for quite some time. we were very aggressive in trying to find her owners, too. and this is NOT a big town). I have been wondering all last night if they could be hers and it has been weighing heavily on my mind. If they are, I just want to rip them right out of their situation if i could because if she was treated the way she was, they can't be much better off. We would do nothing to jeopardize her new life, or her being in harms' way, so i am just sitting here, sitting on my hands in frustration.

You could call and inquire about the pups. Maybe get a chance to see them. Inquire about the parents, which is not unusual, right. And if you find out that she was the mom....stick it to the losers.

I am just jumping out of my skin right now to do that!

But since i am not driving anymore, would have to get DH to take me there or get a spy to go back there and copy down the number.

We can't really claim animal neglect, because to investigate it, AC would have to get the big girl back, and we would not let her go through that. If they get desperate and we see the puppies offered "free", you know we will be over there in 5 seconds/call the rescue to get them. If any one thinks of a better idea, let me know (or if i should just put it out of my mind and stop thinking about it, LMK too). I must be insane!!!!

It was SO good of you to take such good care of the big girl...I hope she does go to her forever home very very soon. You know...if she was so nice to the weeners...I bet she'd be nice to a cat too!

Another update:

She went through her spay just fine.

She was really hanging low from having so much puppies. Her rear mammary glands (the back too) were hanging almost to her knees. I thought it was just from giving birth too much, but actually, it is suspected that she had to nurse her puppies way longer than the normal time. (months instead of a few weeks). Maybe the owners didn't give the puppies any other food to experiment with or eat, and she was a very, very wonderful mommy dog to feed her babies that long and make sure they survived. It was felt that if she layed on it a certain way, she could tear it and hurt herself or get it caught on something. And she is a young dog relatively speaking...4 years old, so its not like she is at the end of her days.

On her way home (the night before she was spayed), Susan with rescue stopped by a friends who is a breeder to pick up something, and she was impressed with the big girl's confirmation. Susan said NO WAY is she going to ever have another puppy again for basically any price! :cheer2: YAY.

Oh what a great ending to this sad story! I hope that her forever home loves her as much as you did. Does Ollie get to visit occasionally to get re slobbered:rotfl: :rotfl:

Thanks for all you did for her! You changed her life for the better. I hope from now on she sleeps on the softest of cushions and has a life of luxury, she deserves it!

I think the best part for me was when we gave her a bone.

It wasn't a "real bone" but a large bone shaped treat with stuff in the middle that Alex and Ollie's great-aunt had to buy them because there was a dachshund on it. We just got it that day and decided to give it to her because it would take a week for our boys to get through it. Anyway, she looked at and her expression was as if she was saying..."you mean it?? this is for MEEE???". And she just kicked up her heels (and this is not a high energy dog) and then snuggled into eat it like a most prized possession/best thing in the whole world. It reminded me of when a little kid who has never had a toy of their own gets one. I bet no one has ever given her a special treat before.

She get to go home as soon as the vet says its okay (hanging out at Susan's as soon as she gets past the first few days of being careful after surgery)
