I want to take the safety buckle from one of Bella's old harnesses and sew onto a new harness that does not have a safety buckle. What is the best type of thread to use to ensure safety?

I usualy use quilting thread for stuff like that. It is super strong.
I agree, extra strong thread is in order. I'm not sure what mine is but its very thick.

Quliting or heavy duty. Make 2 rows about 1/8 of an inch apart, and sew it on double--when you bring the thread thru the needle make a small knot. I do on all my strapping with the buckle. If you don't have a machine you can do it by hand.

Just make sure you double sew. I do that even when I put in my D-ring. I make a double seam on the top with an 1/8 of an inche between and one to the bottom of the D-ring--also double seam with 1/8 inch in between.

:thanx: I really appreciate the advice. I'm going to pick up some quilting thread this weekend and get to work!

Hi, I am Brenda from Harmony Dachshund Rescue Ranch in Virginia. Does anyone use a Hug-A-Dog Harness? I love them and will never go back to a traditional harness. We even sell them at our rescue now so all our sweet rescue babies can get one at cost. http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c386/badgerdogbren/OllieinHAD.jpg

I have 2 of the hug-a-dog but since I sew I now make my own.
Bren, that's a cute pic. :hearts: That is really neat to have them available to your rescue's.

Well, good for you I am not at all a domestic godess and would not be able to make such things. I bought material to make belly bands for my boys and it's still in the bag... my bad

Bren thats funny. I had 4 years of sewing in high school and later on sewed dance costumes for my daughter who had tap and hawaiin/polynessian dance classes for 14 years.

You go girl, I am glad someone can do it. I don't know one end or the other of a sewing machine so anything I do is by hand.. LOL :rotfl:

Bren I think that is great. April, Shirley and Helene are one heckofa great team and a lovely bunch of folks to work with. I have a penguin fabric Hug a Dog... and the company I worked for did their catalogs.

He is such a cutie! Yep, Bella has 4 hug-a-dog harnesses and we love them. Her daddy won't walk her in the pink or red hug-a-dog and wanted a more "manly" harness to walk her in so she got the camo harness from www.bellaparis.com but it doesn't have the safety buckle. Our princess must be safe so I have to get a buckle sewn on!

I don't know how much you know about sewing but what you can also do is-- take of the velcro and sew the front together-like a slip over and you don't have to worry about velcro and a buckle. I'm making Petunia a sundress and it will be a slip over plus be a harness, I might have it done tonight. I want to make a matching hat to go with it. I love the Look of the slip over, makes it look more dressy.

Amanda you are just to cute--don't know why they call you Brat. I wish I lived closer so I could teach you to sew. Right now I don't feel so great about Pippits Harness-don't know what happened thats the first one I made that is not a good fit. Wait until you see Petunia's cute 4th of July dress. I'm making Gunner a matching harness.

I like one that slips over too- Laika has Fear of Velcro so I figure the less the better and I had so much trouble getting the buckle right on my first harness attempt.

Where she is longhaired it is better to have a slip over, the velcro gets in the way--check out the ones on PetEdge--they have the slip over.
