View Full Version : Tag Chewing

How can I make Petey stop chewing his ID tag to bits? It's on his collar (which he rarely wears anyway, as I prefer the harness for his walks, and he goes nekkie in the house) and today I had to put the collar on him cause his harness broke. Well he couldn't even walk 2 feet without going into the whole "bend my head down and under trying to bite this jangly thing OFF this damn collar" spasms. Yes I sprayed it with bitter apple, and once he had that licked off, it was back to the chewing. I guess he really doesn't NEED the ID tag on, since he's always either in my house or attached to me with a leash, but dangit other dogs wear them with no problems, and I think he's just being stubborn (imagine that) about it.

Any suggestions? Or should I just let him win? :mad4:

P.S. He also will not tolerate any type of clothing, bandanas, etc. Is he just HeathenDog or what?

Never had the problem...petey must be pretty limber, to bite his own tag

The whole snaky-neck thing, yes. It looks like a furry spotted pretzel having a seizure

My parents poodle did this. To the point where his lower jaw got caught in the collar. They finally just stopped putting one on him.

Cricket doesn't like tags on his collar - he won't chew them, but he tosses his head alot. We finally stuck his rabies vacc on his harness and he's microchipped for the other info. could he not like the collar? And not just the tag?

This might be an option or having your name and phone embroidered the collar might be a good thing too.

Since he only wears it occasionally how about taping it to his collar, at least it won't bother him by hanging down. Granted it might look odd but I'm sure it won't bother him. How about a permanent microchip?

Julie does the same thing!!!!! Or atleast she used to....I think she's grown out of it now....there's a website that sells tags that go on the collar like a belt buckle....somebody on here made a thread/post about it......now where did that go?

My dogs wears this pet necklace. It doesn't dangle. Another DLCer recommended it!

My only concern is that it does not have any "give" if he gets caught on something. B/c it's a type of chain. My husband thinks that it would break and nothing would happen if Oscar got it caught on something. I do worry about this (but I am a worrier).

Join the club I'm a worry wart too! Actually it really doesn't look like it would be hard to break if it got caught. It's nice to have an I.D. but even better if he has a microchip.

We have a microchip but I don't really trust it (see, I'm a worrier).

Don't really know what to tell ya cuz Willie(Petey's twin??) does the same thing. I took his tags off and put them somewhere safe. He is never out of my sight, unless I'm not home, then he's in the house. He nearly chewed his rabies tag to death, but still have the numbers, and cert., so thank god!!!!

Both Dudley and Mitzi chewed their tags. I think I went through 2 each for them until they out grew it. Now they mostly go collarless unless we're going out somewhere.

Well, what I worry about is whether he would be scanned at all if someone found him. And it took a long time for the Avid Microchip people to get our info correct. They made a lot of mistakes. I think we finally have it right but I lost some faith in them after that.

My three are listed under my vets name so if someone calls it in they can call the on call person (if it's after hours) and they'll look up where the dog belongs. I wasn't sure if I like this idea but they reasured me that if I was out looking for the dog I wouldn't be home and they're always around to pick up the animal if need be so I just left it that way.

Mine never did that! I have had 1 pup get the lower jaw caught under another pups collar (scared me 1/2 to death) since then I never put the collars on unless we go away from home.

Tasha has a harness for walkies with the tags on that. She's nekkid indoors. THAT seems like the easiest solution...as long as Petey doesn't escape from home. A chip is always a good idea for peace of mind.

Get this...I live so far in the boonies that the vet doesn't "do" microchipping. Petey IS always with me or in the house, so I guess wearing a tag really isn't a priority. He goes nakie all the time unless wearing his harness for walks outside. He has FINALLY figured out that if he actually holds still when I try to harness him, the whole outside thingie happens MUCH quicker and without Mommy saying bad words

thanks for the info guys....ya'll rock! :appl:
