How cute is that? It is for a local Oktoberfest in a Dallas suburb. They have traditionally had a "dachshund parade" put on by the DFW Dachshund Club. They now have wiener dog races too, which I am pretty sure the club poo-poos, but I will for sure be entering my boys!! If they did that well at Buda...imagine how well they could do here! :)

No The DFW Dachshund Club NOR The Dachshund Club of America do not support racing. Most clubs across the nation will not support racing. There are some very good reasons for this. Racing started out to be a fun and funny thing...even the DFW Club held public races at one point... but they can no longer do so in good conscience.
The clubs members breed to better the dachshund line. Because of racing they are being approached and asked to breed for longer legged dachshunds so they will be faster. This is not bettering the breed. This is asking to introduce more health problems as dachshunds are not meant to have long legs.
Then there are the safety issues. Many races are put on by people who do not think about the safety of the dogs. More often than not the racing area is not secured. Take the pet polzza here in Austin. Anyone with any dog is welcome at the event. The racing area is sectioned off by a thin piece of plastic that is not even tied down. All it takes is one dachshund to decide to take off, run through the plastic and surprise a german shepard...
Then there are the millions of people who "think" they have their dog trained. I have a "friend" (I use that term loosely) that has 2 huge dogs. He will swear to you they are trained...but if they are chasing something, they will not come when called...they will not come until said thing is dead. IF they tree said thing. He has to go physically pull them off... There are too many people like this that will think nothing of putting their untrained dachshund in the race next to yours... Even at Buda they make you sign a wavier stating they are not responsible if your dog gets hurt or attacked...
So while you might think the clubs are silly for standing against the races, they are not ...they do so for the safety and welfare of their dogs and the dachshund breed itself.
To be honest, the DFW club did consider pulling from the Dachshund Parade because of the races but decided that as long as it was not made to look as if they were supporting the races they would participate in the parade. I an promise you though, you will not see any member dogs in the races.

I'm not even going to post an opion here, cuz I don't want to be sent to the time out chair!!!
Man, :sosad: that the world has to come to this.....what happened to the time when things like races were just for fun????? (poo on all this "breeding for longer legs" business!)
Do really like the logo though!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree it's absolutely wrong for people to want faster dachshunds...racing is supposed to be fun and that is why we did it at Buda and will try it again here. I had no idea that dachshund racing was so serious...seems silly! If I ever judged that anything was dangerous I wouldn't enter my dogs. There are no other dogs allowed at this event and the paperwork says dogs must be leashed or in a carrier at all times. I know that is no guarantee of safety, but still. I would think if the club was really serious they would not want to be associated with the event at all.

I know you are not one of the people that is it in it for the win. I also know you take great care of your dogs and would not put them in an unsafe situation. My point was more that the DCA folks are not doing what they do to be snobs. They have good reasons. It IS very silly that people have lost sight of the fact that it is to be fun. To be fair...they lose sight of that fact in any event. The difference is that when people loose it in Agility or such, they are dressed down by the judge and reminded about the fact...here there is no one to remind them.
As far as the clubs decision to participate... it was a VERY VERY heated discussion over a couple of months...even I know about it and I cannot attend the meetings because I live 200 miles away. The deciding factor in staying was that it is good for rescue. The Fest. has been good for the rescue program and education. It was felt that the greater good of the breed would benefit more from that than from people not knowing why the club pulled out (and very few people would have actually bothered to find out)...
There is bit of irony in the fact that I went to another board just now...and the first line of the first post I saw was...
"We are sorry to say that this season is over for us, even before it got started. There are 4 races left and we won't be able to make any of them. Well, we could, just not compete for the win. We didn't want to pay money for entrance fees and not have a chance for a win." - yes they are talking about dachshund racing.

I LOVE it!!! (the logo not the weird racing people) We do the weener races in Frankenmuth every year. They are inside, on a dance floor LOL. A little hard to take too seriously. They move the polka-ing couples off and have the races. NO other dogs allowed inside. I suppose there could be some danger from a vicious dachshund but I would think no one would enter a dog like that. There are so many people surrounding the dance...er RACING floor that no dog could go anywhere. It's fun..the only bad thing is you can't see.

If they allowed me to throw otto's ball he would be the first one at the finish line! He is obsessive/compulsive about "throw the ball, throw the ball" and then racing down into the orchard to retrieve it!
