Back Brace for dogs.

I came across this today and thought Id share. Obviously vet recommended! but I wonder if it could help for those who need it. Kind of expensive too.

That's interesting. It might help reduce movement and aid in healing and have a thundershirt effect on them also. It's definitely something to remember.

IMO, that would be great for week 3+ of crate rest / conservative care. I would not put it on a dog that is in early stages of IVDD. It is extremely painful and I don't know if I would want any extra pressure on the area. I know Pixel had a really hard time just getting comfortable and he was hopped up on Medicam, Tramadol and Methocarbamol. Around week 3 he was starting to get a bit better. I would be concerned people would use that instead of proper crate rest, and if a dog who is healing jumps off a couch with or without that harness you most likely will pop the compromised disc.

I was thinking that it would be good for later days of crate rest also Lisa. About the time that they start thinking they are healed and ready to go. I certainly wouldn't use it to replace crate rest for the same reasons you stated.

In general, I don't think I would use it as a preventative like they say. first reason is, I don't think it would work. If a disc is going to go, it is going to go. And braces on dogs in general aren't useful. If tight enought to "work". they rub and are uncomfortable. And then the muscles it is supporting become weaker....
Not that having strong back muscles stopped Laika from having a herniated disc but intuitively, it would seem the stronger the muscles surrounding the spine are, the better.
Braces have been discussed on dodger's and commented on by vets and it was all pretty negative. Not that dodger's is the be all and end all of all information but it has been talked about.

I agree that it's useless as a preventative. I believe like you do that if it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen and no brace is going to prevent that. The only time I can see it being helpful is after the first few weeks of crate rest when they start wanting to move around.
